Toothpastes have flavours to make them more palatable. Also to ensure children use the toothpaste and get into good oral hygiene habits.

Fluoride and abrasives don’t taste minty fresh. The clean feeling you get from brushing your teeth is courtesy of the toothpaste’s flavoring agents.
The key goal is to develop good oral care habits.

What is the flavoring agent in toothpaste?

A combination of water-insoluble essential oils, such as spearmint, peppermint, eucalyptus and menthol are often used as flavouring agents in toothpastes and mouthwashes. The flavouring agents are solubilised and dispersed through the paste or liquid via the surfactant.

These days, toothpastes also come in spicy flavors such as fennel or cinnamon-clove, or even in fruit flavors such as apricot or peach.
